FRIARS FRY TUNINO IN FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

Friars still haven’t given up a point this season

By Jay Leon Guerrero

Vance Meno and Tristan Burgos anchored the Father Duenas Friar defense to hold the Southern Dolphins scoreless, winning 35-0 in the ISA High School Football League. FD improved to 3-0 in the ISA league and extended their overall winning streak to 68 games in a row.

Meno stuffed the stat sheet with three rushing touchdowns on offense. On defense, Meno collected five tackles and had one interception for the Friars. Burgos had a team-high six tackles (two for losses) and fumble recovery for the FD.

“We didn’t start the game out the way we wanted to. But we adjusted and executed against a Southern team that played well tonight,” said Meno.

The Dolphins marched down the field in the opening drive and entered the red zone after quarterback Mike Jesus found Ethan Guerrero for a 17 yard gain.

After a penalty against FD, the Dolphins entered the red zone and were on the 11-yard line. Meno and Burgos recorded tackles, and a penalty against the Dolphins pushed the Dolphins out of field goal range.

“They had us on our heels to start the game. This is something we can learn from and grow from it,” said Meno.

The Friars exploded in the second quarter with four touchdowns led by quarterback Alex Sojo and wide receiver Trey Blas. The duo hooked up for two touchdowns in the quarter, 41-yard and 11-yard scores. Meno bulldozed his way to a pair of goal line touchdowns in the quarter as well to put FD up 28-0 by halftime.

Sojo finished the game with 107 total passing yards and 34 rushing yards after sitting out a majority of the second half. Blas also sat the second half with 82 receiving yards on three receptions.

Kymani Taimanglo led the Dolphin defense with a game-high 6.5 tackles, and Braven Chaco added 6 tackles. Kyle Atoigue and Tyler Tevid recorded four tackles each Southern. Guerrero caught both pass targets for 23 yards on offense.

FD had four total sacks for the contest: Mason Whitaker, Luis Barrett and Bennie Taimanglo each recorded a sack while Chase Artero and Ethan Limtiaco shared a sack.

Javin Meno had 40 total yards for FD, 33 rushing, and 7 receiving yards. Donte Salas from Southern carried the ball eight times for a hard 21 yards.

The Dolphins fall to 0-3 for the season and look to bounce back next week Friday versus the GW Geckos. The Friars will play the Okkodo Bulldogs next Saturday.
