GUAM PREPARES FOR eFIBA COMPETITION

Squad gearing for esports showdown with New Zealand

By Patrick Lujan

In conjunction with FIBA Basketball, the eFIBA platform is starting to take off and Guam is going along for the ride.

Guam is one of 61 countries of Season 2 of eFIBA NBA 2K24 series that will go through qualifying stages from October to November. Playing under the Oceania region, Guam and New Zealand are the two lone countries.

Team manager and esports manager of the UOG Triton Esports program Ken San Nicolas said a tryout for the team was held in early August with 18 players coming out. The team came down to the final 10.

“These 10 were chosen for a number of factors, but mostly because they were committed to practices and had the resources to be able to compete (ie. every competitor needs a PS5 and had to be free for not only practices but press and meetings with eFiba),” San Nicolas said.

Guam is slated to take on New Zealand on October 12 and October 24 in the Oceania Finals since there are only two countries. It will be online and our team will be playing from the UOG Triton Esports Arena.

“They have been practicing since late August and got the new game the day it came out which was September 8,” San Nicolas added.

“They are real ballers and 2K fanatics. So I don’t know what to expect. We might surprise people, but we might just get outclassed. The team does well online as a group but none of us are sure if that’s what it’s like versus the top teams.”
