The Tiyan Titans and GW Geckos exemplified the spirit of Guam baseball Tuesday afternoon as the highly-anticipated ISA Baseball League game attracted a big crowd and put on a good show that culminated into an 8-8 tie in the bottom of the 4th inning at the GW Field.
The sun quickly set and confusion over the result of the game ensued just as quick.
Question about the outcome arose as the sun set.
In the end, the official decision is that it wasn’t an official game since it didn’t go through five complete innings so the remainder of the game will be completed at a later date. Tiyan was batting in the bottom of the 4th with the bases loaded when the game was halted by home plate umpire Jimmy ‘The Principal’ Reyes due to darkness.
Game Summary
The Geckos began strong with Keoni Raguidin making it home, taking advantage of Titans pitcher Caleb Palomo’s struggles in the first inning. John Cabrera’s 3 RBIs led the Geckos to a 4-0 lead. Despite this, the Titans responded with a resilient defense, ending the inning with a catch by Graig Reyes. In their first inning, the Titans showed a strong start, with GW pitcher David Pangelinan striking out key players. However, Pangelinan also allowed multiple walks, resulting in a tie game at 4-4 by the end of the inning. Travis Barcinas’ 2 RBIs contributed to the Titans’ comeback in a well-fought and competitive opening inning.
In the second inning, Geckos Joseph Cruz started with a walk, but Palomo’s strikeout and a double play by the Titans quickly resulted in two outs. Despite Geckos’ keen observation, the inning ended with #44 Kanoa Cruz catching a pop fly, maintaining the 4-4 score. The Titans, with bases loaded and no outs, capitalized on a pitching switch from GW, and Palomo secured 2 RBIs, giving the Titans an 8-4 lead by the end of the second inning. GW, meanwhile, made two pitching changes in the inning.
In the third inning, Geckos secured multiple walks off Palomo that led to two runs to cut the Titans’ lead to 8-6. Tiyan made a strategic move, switching Palomo for Peter Concepcion, who struck out two Geckos.
In the dramatic fourth inning, the Geckos made a strong effort to catch up, tying the score at 8-8. Key plays included Jesse Castro driving in Avian Gumataotao, leveling the playing field with one out.
As the Titans geared up for the bottom half of the inning by loading the bases and Tatum Garrido at bat, the umpire ultimately called the game, leaving the outcome in suspense.
Tiyan came into the game at 4-0 while GW was 1-0.
