
PRESS RELEASE – The University of Guam baseball team advanced to the winner’s bracket final next Friday night with a 12-6 win over the Dodgers on Sunday night to face the Pirates who had a come from behind win over the Amigos 5-4 on Sunday afternoon in the other bracket play opener in the Triton Baseball – UOG Endowment Foundation Invitational at the Triple J Baseball Complex at Okkodo High School.
The Tritons scored early and often in their win over the Dodgers in the second game of bracket play. The Tritons who came in seeded 4th in for the double-elimination part of the invitational tournament scored 6 runs on the #1 seeded Dodgers in the top of the first inning and added a run in the 2nd, 3 more in the 3rd and single runs in the 4th and 7th innings. The Dodgers scored 2 runs in the 1st and 4th inning as well as single runs in the 3rd and the 5th but could never dig out of the deficient that UOG had built up early.
Rico Miner picked up the win for the Tritons with relief help from Dominic Pangelinan. Pangelinan went 3 for 3 for the game with a walk and hit-by-pitch as well. He scored 2 runs for the Tritons.
In the other bracket play game, the Pirates were down 4-0 going into the bottom of the 6th inning against the Amigos when they scored 5 runs and held off the Amigos in the top of the 7th to win 5-4.
In the opening game of the day, the Dodgers beat the Pirates 6-4 in the final round robin game of the tournament with a 6-run rally in the 6th inning. The Pirates in this game, scored 4 runs in the first inning and held the 4-0 lead until the bottom of the 6th when the Dodgers erupted for 6 runs.
The Dodgers became the #1 Seed for the bracket play part of the tournament while the Pirates were the #2 Seed. The Amigos were the #3 Seed and the UOG Tritons were the #4 Seed. The pairings for the 1st round of bracket play were the Pirates Vs the Amigos and the Dodgers Vs the Tritons.
After the opening round games played Sunday, the Pirates and the UOG Tritons will play next Friday night in the winner’s bracket at 7 pm, with the winner of that game advancing to the Championship game the following Friday. The Dodgers and the Amigos play at 3 pm next Sunday in the loser’s bracket game, with the loser of that game being eliminated from the tournament and finishing in 4th place.
The loser of the Tritons – Pirates game, will play the winner of the Dodgers and Amigos game at 6pm next Sunday, with the loser being eliminated from the tournament and finishing 3rd. The winner of this game will advance to the Championship game.
All games are played at the Triple J Baseball Complex at Okkodo High School. The entry fee for the games is $3 for adults and $2 for Seniors and Non-UOG students. UOG students and kids 5 and under are free.
UOG Women’s Soccer
The Lady Tritons Women’s Soccer team lost on Sunday afternoon to the Southern Heat 8-2 in the Guam Football Association Women’s Futsal League at the Dededo Sports Complex gym.
The Tritons were down 4-1 after the first 25 minutes of the match and were outscored again 4-1 in the second half to lose 8-2.
Reylynn Sapong scored both goals for the Lady Tritons in the match. Tonijaney Tyguiengco scored 3 goals for the Southern Heat to the lead the team.
The Lady Tritons are now 2-4-1 in the GFA Futsal League. UOG plays the BOG Stykers II next Sunday at 1:00pm at the Dededo Sports Complex.
