AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP TO SHOWCASE TOP LEVEL GOLF ACTION

Top amateurs to take on three different golf courses in three-round affair

PRESS RELEASE – Guam National Golf Federation (GNGF) is excited to announce the upcoming 2024 Guam Amateur Golf Championship to be held on Saturday June 2, June 8 & June 9, 2024, at the Finest Guam Golf & Resort, Onward Talofofo Golf Club, and the Country Club of the Pacific. The stroke play tournament format will feature some of the best golfers on island.

“The Guam Amateur Championship is held annually and is our signature event and the premier golfing event on Guam. The tournament will determine the 2024 Champion of both the Men and Ladies Divisions amongst Guam’s top amateur golfers. Men will tee off from the “tips” or championship tees while the ladies will tee off from the red tees and USGA rules will apply,” said Sirena Cassidy, Guam National Team Director for GNGF. This year’s event will also include a senior division featuring players who are 55 years old and above. The seniors will tee off from the white/blue tee boxes.

“This tournament will again feature Guam’s best golfers competing against each other over the course of three days at the three different venues. The final day of the competition fittingly will take place at CCP which is the longest and most challenging golf course on island. We expect the three courses to be in excellent condition, and hopefully we will see good weather conditions throughout the competition,” Cassidy said.

Our field will also include veteran world amateur ranked player Redge Camacho. Other veteran golfers expected to compete are Nalapon Vongjalorn, T.J. Hubert, and Sam Teker to name a few. Collegiate player and 2023 men’s champion Ivan Sablan is expected to return back to defend his title. Returning collegiate player Markus Nanpei is also expected to be in the tournament field, as well as junior golf standouts Stussy Shiroma, Ray Ray Blas, and Santino Yanza.

In the Ladies Division, 2023 women’s champion Tyanna Jacot is expected to return to make her 3rd consecutive title defense against top junior golf standout Mina Manibusan, and veteran golfers Tessie Blair, Rose Tarpley, Emiri Sunga, Hiromi Takasu and Tai Maulupe.

“This year’s field includes players with a lot of international competition experience. We expect to see a very competitive event with some low scores posted,” added Cassidy.

As with the previous 2023 Guam Amateur Championship, the Tournament Committee has added a net score competition which will be based on the players’ actual handicaps. “We will have both Men Championship and Senior Divisions and a Ladies Division, and there will be great prizes and trophies to be awarded to individual low net and low gross players.”

The winners of this tournament will also earn a spot and points on the World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR) through the R&A. The top men finisher will also automatically qualify for a spot on the Guam Nomura Cup team which is scheduled to be played in October 2024. The top senior finisher will automatically qualify for a spot on the Guam Senior National Team representing Guam at the upcoming Asia Pacific Golf Confederation Senior Amateur Championship which is scheduled to be held in November 2024.

GNGF is a nonprofit organization promoting Guam’s amateur and junior golfers in highly competitive international golf tournaments. Our Guam National Teams, both adult amateurs and junior golfers, represent Guam in off island tournaments and compete with the best in the world. The development and support of our Guam golfers are a high priority of GNGF. Website: www.gngfguam.org
