BEACH DUO WINS 1ST EVER MICRO MEDAL

Oh so close to a gold medal

The beach volleyball duo of Kendra Byrd and Lori Okada made Guam history, becoming the first team to win a medal in women’s beach volleyball Tuesday afternoon in the 10th Micronesian Games in Majuro.

The pair, however, fell just short of the gold as they fell to Palau in the championship match 22-20, 9-21, 13-15 on a hot day in Majuro to settle for silver. Guam’s women never won a medal in previous Micro Games.

“(It was the ) hottest day of the competition,” said Herman Ada, Guam Volleyball Federation President, who is in Majuro as a technical director for the event. “But that’s beach volleyball for you.”

Team Guam went undefeated in pool play and beat Palau in straight sets over the weekend, but the gold medal match was a different story.

Ada said the duo was battling heat exhaustion in the under the hot sun.

Next up for Team Guam is to regroup and retool for the Pacific Mini Games in Palau in 2025.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
