The JFK Islanders and GW Geckos battles it out in the final match of the Interscholastic Boys High School Football League regular season Monday evening at the JFK home field.
Islanders sophomore Landon Cruz went off the hook, pulling off an impressive hat trick in the their 6-0 win over the Geckos as JFK finished the regular season at 8-1-1 and gets the top seed with 25 points. The FD Friars finished with 24 points (7-0-3).
“It was okay but there’s a few things we need to fix. Our defense was pretty tight and we just need to finish strong as well,” Cruz said after his stellar performance.
The Islanders came out hot, scoring four goals in the first half, giving the Geckos no chance to even step on their half of the field.
The Geckos defense was working hard to keep the ball out of their keeper with Jonah Blas making several impressive blocks. The first of JFK’s goals came from Cruz with a fast shot as the middles sent the ball up top making an opening for Cruz to strike through. Shortly after, senior Caleb Avelino also got a goal of his own as CJ Sablan sent the ball up top for Avelino to receive.
Cruz and Logan Wood put two further goals for the Islanders before the half. Coming back from the half , the Islanders did not spend a single second to wait as Alesana Jorlang struck a goal bringing the score to 5-0.
After a while of battling for the ball, the Islanders managed to finally find their target as Sablan sent a beautiful pass assisting Cruz to score another goal bringing the score 6-0.
“Like every other school it was out goal to make it in the Top 8, we’re just happy that we’re getting in and we look forward to playing,” said JFK assistant coach Shiau-Yan Hsu.
That wraps up the regular season with the quarterfinals slated for this Friday.
Despite the loss, GW still moves on to the quarterfinals (2-7-1) and plays the top-seeded FD Friars in the first round of the post season.
