BULLDOGS KNOCK OUT DOLPHINS 81-45

Okkodo almost doubles up on Southern

By Jay Leon Guerrero

The defending ISA Boys Basketball League champion Okkodo Bulldogs got their first win of the season, defeating the visiting Southern Dolphins 81-45 to improve to 1-1 for the season.

Monte Cabrera scored a game-high 34 points, and teammate Robby Haggard had a near triple-double to help the Bulldogs get their first win of the season. The Dolphins drop to 1-1.

Haggard stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists and five steals.

“I honestly did not know I was close to a triple-double. I was just doing my best to help my team.”

Okkodo opened up a 43-22 lead by halftime. Cabrera scored 22 of his game-high 34 points in the first half.

The Bulldogs bounced back after dropping their season opener to the GW Geckos. “Our last game (against GW) was tough. We just have to come into games wanting it more,” said Haggard.

“Our team does well on the offensive side. We have no problem scoring. We just need to improve on our defense as we move forward into the season,” said Haggard.

The Dolphins started the game out with an early 12-10 lead behind a pair of three-pointers made by Javan Naputi and Michael Sanchez. The Bulldogs ended the quarter on an 8-0 run with Ethan Solidum and Cabrera sinking three-pointers.

The Bulldogs never looked back, establishing their early offense attack backed by good three-point shooting.

Quinata led the Dolphins with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Naputi had nine points and five rebounds, Matthew Quinata had nine points and three rebounds for Southern.

“We were more motivated today as a team. Our home crowd and our coach motivated us to get the win,” said Haggard. Both teams will play next Monday with the Dolphins hosting the Sanchez Sharks at Oceanview, and the Bulldogs will play at Tiyan.

Bulldogs win JV thriller
Javan Laxamana made the game winning basket and was fouled in the process to help the Bulldogs win the JV game 56-53. The Dolphins tied the game at 53-53 with six seconds left, and Laxamana drove to the basket and converted the old-fashioned three-point play with .03 second left to help Okkodo improve to 1-1.  The Dolphins JV team led for a majority of the contest but dropped to 1-1.

OTHER GAME

The Sanchez Sharks improved to 2-0 with a close 54-51 win over the GW Geckos that went down to the wire. It was GW’s first loss of the season (1-1).

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
