CAMACHO MAKES CUT AT ASIA-PACIFIC AMATEURS

Guam golfers take on the best from Asia, Pacific and Middle East

Guam golfer Redge Camacho made the cut at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championships this past weekend at the Taiheiyo Club Gotemba in Japan.

Camacho’s opening rounds of 70-77 among the prestigious field earned him entry into the final rounds, where he shot 81-77 in the weekend to finish tied for 61st. It was his first time to make the cut in eight tries in the tournament.

“It felt great making the cut,” Camacho said. “I put in a lot of work prior to heading out to Japan so it was nice to see it pay off. Unfortunately, I didn’t play well in the 3rd and 4th rounds, but it was nice to see the weekend for the first time.”

The best amateurs from all over this side of the world were in action. The best from Japan, Korea, China, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and many others. The winner from China shot rounds of 67-67-67-67.

“The competition out there is filled with so much talent. The best players in the Asia Pacific region play that event. It’s cool to see how our games compare to theirs,” Camacho said.

Two-time reigning Guam amateur champion Ivan Sablan missed the cut by three strokes after shooting 76-74.

After missing the cut, Sablan opted to caddie for his good friend Redge for the final two rounds.

“My caddie actually my boi Ivan 😎. After I made the cut he asked if he could caddie. Couldn’t have asked for a better guy on the bag. He kept my head in the right space even when I was playing bad. He kept reminding me to stay committed to every shot and to not let bad scores bother me.”
