Saturday’s ISA Baseball League game was a rematch of last season’s championship game, with the Father Duenas Friars getting sweet revenge over the defending champion ND Royals 13-1 at the GW Field.
Saez Alvarez and Ayden Aguon combined to pitch the seven innings to keep the Royals at bay. ND lost a host of their top players to graduation after that incredible championship game last year.
FD dropped five runs in the opening inning and never looked back as Alvarez, Kaiden Weakley, Max Dirige, Landen Minorand Ryan Lizama all scored.
ND scored their lone run in the 2nd inning when Nate Cruz crossed the plate.
The Friars scored five more runs in the 4th inning to put the game away.
Alvarez was 3-for-3 with two double and for pitched three innings with two strikeouts. Aguon with four innings pitched, seven strikeouts, no hits, and one run.
This is what they had to say:
“We came out here with the mentality to run through anybody in our way with class and respect. Personally, this game is gonna be the most personal game to me, so it feels good coming off with the win, our team has put in hard work in the past month, and it just shows on the field that what we do at practice is paying off. My goal for this season is to get it back to FD, not just to put on a show for myself, but for the team to put on a show and have FD on top again. Don’t let one bad play rock you there’s always going to be another chance and once you see that chance take it, slow down the game, it’s all in your mind.” said – Aguon
“Well, I wanted to come here and win, especially from last year’s season. We knew we had to come here to win, but also to make a statement about this season. My goals for this season are to win as a team, play fundamental baseball, keep fundamentals as the number one thing, make fewer errors, do things easily and simply, and not try to do so much. Keep your head down and play the game, know that your mistakes are just mistakes and are over, and just move on to the next play, lastly shoutout to my coaches for explaining and teaching us the fundamentals and always reminding us to stay humble.” said – Alvarez.
