5-set thriller in women’s finals

PRESS RELEASE – It was a long night in the UOG Calvo Field House, as both the 3rd Place Match between the Lady Tritons and Lady Bombers and the Championship Match between Guam Pro 1 and Au Mana went 5 sets each in the Lady Triton Volleyball League, but it was good, exciting volleyball to be watched. The night ended about 11 pm with Guam Pro 1 winning the championship and the Lady Tritons took 3rd place.

In the opener, the University of Guam Lady Tritons defeated the Lady Bombers of Andersen Air Force Base 3-2 in a classic match for 3rd place. The Tritons open the night with a 25-19 win in the set, but the Lady Bombers came right back to win the 2nd set, 25-15.

In the third set, the Bombers had a big lead, up 21-12 in the set, but the Lady Tritons showed some toughness and came back and won the 3rd set 26-24. The Lady Bombers were up big again in the 4th set, but let the Tritons back into the match again, but the Bombers held on to win the set 25-23.

The 5th set to 15 was a close battle, as Tritons led 8 to 7 when the teams changed sides and both teams traded the lead, but the match was tied at 14-14 when the Tritons scored two in a row to win the set and the match 16-14.

The Lady Tritons finished the season with a 5-2 record while the Lady Bombers were 3-5.

In the championship match, it was also a back and forth affair with Guam Pro 1 winning the match 3-2 over Au Mana. Guam Pro 1 won the first set 25-17 but Au Mana won the 2nd set easily, 25-14 and tying the match at 1-1.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
