PRESS RELEASE – The excitement is building as Guam prepares to host the top ranked team in Asia today for a high-level hoops battle against our Bank of Guam Men’s National Basketball Team.
A FIBA Asia Cup Qualification matchup between Team Guam and Team Japan is scheduled for Sunday, November 24, 2024, with Tip-Off at 3 pm. This showdown will take place at the at the University of Guam Calvo Field House in Mangilao, where fans can expect an electrifying atmosphere as the teams compete for a chance to secure their spot in the prestigious 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, featuring the best in Asia & Oceania. Don’t miss this historic sporting event!
Team Japan, currently ranked #21 in the FIBA World Rankings, is known for its dynamic playing style and skilled roster. The Akatsuki Five, as they are known, turned heads at the recent Paris Olympics when they lost an exciting overtime game against the eventual silver medalist, Team France. With a strong history in international basketball, they are eager to showcase their talent against the home team and compete in Guam for the first time ever.
Team Guam dropped in the FIBA World Rankings to #80 after its loss earlier this year to Japan in Tokyo. Team Guam earned some respect by battling Japan in front of 10,000 fans and held a 1-point lead at half-time. Guam finally lost its lead for good late in the 3rd quarter, when Japan showed their expertise and experience, as they pulled away for the win. Team Guam has elevated year after year, with only 5 losses over the last 10 years, while recording over 65 wins, several Gold Medals, and a FIBA World-Ranking as high as #74.
“We are thrilled to host this important qualifier,” said E.J. Calvo, Team Guam President & Men’s Team Head Coach. “This game highlights the growth of basketball in Guam…as we not only improve our play on the court, but our ability to mount events at this level of international sports. We invite fans to come out and support our national team and enjoy the highest level of basketball played in Guam in a long time!”
The event is expected to sell out, with hundreds of fans expected to fly in from Japan to also attend the game, and organizers encourage fans to purchase tickets early to ensure they don’t miss this historic event. General admission tickets are now on sale online at guamtime.net!
