As April is now upon us, expect Matapang Beach Park to be packed as Guam’s high school paddlers hit the beach with their coaches and supporters filling the shoreline. Despite the early mornings, the weather was clear and energy was high among the athletes as they prepared for the GKCF Kareran Galaide races.
This weekend, Guam High’s junior varsity teams dominated the 500m races in each of the categories: Dinana (mixed), Famalao’an (female) and Lalahi (male). Interestingly, as competition begins for the varsity races going 1000m, GHS falters for the Lalahi finals’ top team to be the Okkodo Bulldogs and the mighty Islanders taking the top spots for the all females and mixed teams.
As of this week, there have now been two sprint regattas to alter the current standings for the teams and meaning there are now only two race weekends left to decide the regular season division champions.
The regular season leads into the SPPC Circle K/76 Kareran Galaide Mini-Distance Championships on May 4 and the SPPC Circle K/76 Sprint Championships on May 18.
