HOOPS: GECKOS OUTSCORE ISLANDERS

Geckos pull through in second half

By Carmen Gogue

The George Washington Geckos turned up the heat to come back from a first half deficit to beat the John F. Kennedy Islanders 61-49 at the Tiyan gym Friday night in the ISA Boys Basketball League. The Geckos celebrate this win and their seniors on the team with this being their final home game of the season.

It truly was a Senior Night for the Geckos as Senior Djay Osborn led his team with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Senior teammates Daran Treltas contributed a close 16 points with Kaden Apiag trailing with 14 points to aid the victory.

Despite an early lead from the Islanders in the first half at 21-18, the Geckos returned after the halftime focused to win.

As the Geckos caught up and continued sharing one to two point leads with the Islanders, it was Osborn and Treltas who fueled the offense to close the third quarter at 39-33 a six point lead over the islanders.

The Geckos had the home crowd going wild as they caught fire in the fourth quarter with back-to-back three pointers from Daran Treltas and Aiden Uncangco to lead 45-33.

Jordan Madrazo hit a three pointer of his own for the Islanders, but Uncangco cut that run short moving swiftly through JFK’s defense to get an easy bucket with the score now 47-36.

With an 11 point lead, the Geckos weren’t finished as their defense stifled the Islanders making it difficult to move the ball around and find open shots. Strong defense and attacks to the basket, the Geckos held the lead to outscore the Islanders.

The Geckos improve to 6-4 as the Islanders end their four game winning streak falling to 6-4.

Junior Varsity

In the junior varsity match, the Geckos defeated the Islanders 57-42. Jaydin Martinez led the Geckos with 15 points.
