In just the fourth ISA Track and Field meet, the defending champion Guam High Panthers boys teams dominated once again on the track placing first in all the events Saturday afternoon at the John F. Kennedy track but were only able to place in the top spot for one field event, the Discus.
Guam High’s Kwesi Aniagyei represented the Panthers in the Discus field event securing the top spot and recording his personal record of 29.87 meters. “I’m pretty excited about breaking my personal record, you know one of my teammates and I were competing and for us it was really just to see who could throw further today so I’m pretty happy about that,” said Aniagyei.
Father Duenas Friar Donovan Flores took the top spot in the Shot Put for a distance of 10.60 meters. Sanchez Sharks Jan Almoite was first for the Javelin after throwing 35.90 meters and Joshua Gatbonton snatched the top spot in the Long Jump with a 5.46 meters finish. Tiyan’s Christopher Angoco recorded a personal record in the Triple Jump event with 11.75 meters jump to take the first-place position.
As for the girls track and field events, the defending champion Panthers were able to take seven of the events to include the 100-meters, 400-meters, 3000 meters, 100-meters hurdles, 4×100 relay, 4×400 relay, and the Triple Jump.
Guam High’s Taliana Longoria trailed closely behind teammate Aubrey Frank who led the competition all the way until the final lap of the 3000 meters race until Longoria turned the jets on to pass Frank recording her personal record of 12 minutes and 48.16 seconds.
“It felt amazing, she’s [Aubrey] usually the best one in that race and so to be able to have passed her was crazy,” said Longoria. “I was feeling a little burnt but I wanted to at least give it my all and not quit on myself. My goal for the last meet is to just be faster and keep breaking my personal record.”
The Academy Cougars competed well against the defending champions winning a total of five events the 200-meter sprint event, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, and Long Jump.
Senior Taylor-Ann Santos won the 200-meter for a season record of 28.11 seconds and the Long Jump event with 4.50 meters. “I just want to keep on improving on the things I need to improve on for the All-Island meet. For me, I have a good start, but I want to work on fixing up my finishes and for the jumps working on my approach and run through,” said Santos.
Sanchez Shark Eyana Pereda-Marques placed first in three of the track events to include the 800-meters, 1500-meters, 300-meters hurdles. In the 800-meters and 1500-meters races, Pereda-Marques ran a 2 minutes and 51.06 seconds and a five minute and 43.05 seconds. She also recorded a personal record in the 300-meters hurdles with a 54.35 seconds finish.
There is just one meet left until all the high schools’ best athletes will compete at the ISA All-Island Track and Field meet.
