JUNIOR NATIONALS TAKE UOG BASEBALL TOURNEY

Young squad dominates tournament

PRESS RELEASE – The Guam Junior National Team won the 3rd Annual University of Guam Baseball Invitational Tournament over the Dodgers on Saturday afternoon at the Paseo Stadium with a 12-6 win. The Junior Nationals got out to a fast 6-0 lead in the game, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning with 2 hits, a walk, a hits batsman and two Dodger errors and added their 6th run in the 2nd on a lead off hit, a balk and two groundouts to lead 6-0 after two full innings.

But the Dodgers would comeback, scoring 4 runs in the top of the third on four walks, three Junior Nationals errors and a hit to cut the Junior Nationals lead to 6-4. The Dodgers cut the lead to 6-5 in the top of the 4th, with another run on a walk and a hit, to make it 6-5 going into the bottom of the 4th but the Junior Nationals would take control again in the bottom of the inning by scoring 4 runs and leading 10-5 after four innings.

The Dodgers would cut the lead to 10-6 with a run in the 5th inning but the Junior Nationals would add two more runs in the bottom of the 6th and win the game 12-6.

The Guam Junior Nationals would end the tournament with a perfect record of 6-0 for the four weekend tournament. The Dodgers ended the tournament with a 4-3 record to finish runner-up. The Cardinals went 2-4 in the tournament for 3rd Place and UOG Tridents ended the tournament with a 0-5 record and in 4th place.

A 10 member All-Tournament Team and Most Valuable Player was announced after the Championship Game which featured the following players:

Junior Nationals – Sean Baluro

Guaifon Terlaje was named the “Most Valuable Player” for the 2024 UOG Baseball Invitational.

The Guam Junior Nationals have won two straight UOG Tournaments after winning the UOG Spring Tournament last May. The Dodgers won the first UOG Baseball Invitational in February of 2020 when UOG restarted its baseball program 3 years ago.

QUICK HITS

The JFK Islanders won the first ever Memorial Weekend High School Basketball Tournament.

The All-Tournament selection were Zhion Macapinlac JFK, Darwin Ecijan JFK, Matthew Quinata Southern, and Malcom Fernandez Tiyan.

JFK’s Collin Rillamas was named tournament MVP.

The Prospects captured the Guam PONY Colt Spring Baseball League (14-16) championship Saturday with a masterful 2-0 win over the Smokies.
Pitchers Gavin Alcantara (5 innings) and Javier Taimanglo (2 innings) combined to throw a no-hitter.
Taimanglo and Juan Carlo Presnell drove in the two runs for the Prospects, and Skyler Paulino had two hits.
