KNIGHTS, DOLPHINS FIGHT TO A DRAW

Heated match between two title contenders

By Aloha Alesasis

It was a heated game between the Southern Dolphins and St. John’s Knights in the Interscholastic Boys High School Football League, as both teams managed to find a pair of goals Wednesday afternoon at JFK’s Ramsey Field.

It was a battle of title contenders as the Knights came into the match in second place at 7-1-0, while the Dolphins were tied for fourth place at 5-2-1.

As the game began, both teams had every intention to play hard and take the win. The Knights took control within the first few minutes of the game as they attacked and brought the ball in the Dolphins side resulting in a goal from Roy Jin 11 minutes into the game setting the score 1-0.

The Dolphins took the goal from the Knights as a wake up call creating finer passes and communication, as they pushed and drove the ball toward the Knights side of the field locking their target. Cody Pangelinan assisted on Gatbo Topasna’s goal, tying the game to 1-1.

As both the Knights and Dolphins continued to battle between possessions and shots, Dolphins goalkeeper Sinahi San Nicolas managed to catch the aimed shot the Knights tried to plan.

Fighting for advantage, Pangelinan powered yet another kick to score the second goal for the Dolphins putting them up 2-1 right before halftime.

In a much needed halftime, both teams stepped in having the mindset of powering up the game as they both pressured and attacked the ball locking their targets in the box. Both goalies from the Knights Harry Vitalde and San Nicolas from the Dolphins had their eye on the ball blocking and catching many goals striking towards their box.

As the game coming to a close, the Knights did not back down as Justin Li showcased his skilled moves and scored the Knights second goal tying the game again at 2-2.

With a little time left, the Dolphins put their focus back in the game after a conflict in the field built up, making sure that the Knights won’t have a chance to bring the ball towards their side tightening their defense and not letting anyone through.

Time ran out with both teams unable to get a victory outcome leaving the score 2-2.

It’s going to be a highly competitive postseason with both teams in the thick of things along with the top-ranked FD Friars, JFK Islanders and Harvest Eagles boasting credible rosters to take the championship with the playoffs getting underway next week.

Postponed Game

The other matchup scheduled between the JFK Islanders and ND Royals had to be rescheduled due to the random power outage occurring throughout the island. That match is rescheduled for Thursday afternoon at 4:30 at JFK.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
