BULLDOGS INCH PAST ISLANDERS IN RUGBY PLAYOFFS

Apatang leads Okkodo past JFK

By Aloha Alisasis

As the sun set Friday evening, the John F. Kennedy Islanders and Okkodo Bulldogs went head-to-head at the Guam High Panthers Home Field as the first game for the ISA Boys Rugby League quarterfinals.

Deon Apatang helped the Bulldogs win their playoff opener against the Islanders 14-12 with a try and two conversions.

As the game begins, both the teams had the mindset to have a strong defensive comeback and take the title for the game. Apatang scored the first try as the game begins giving the Bulldogs a 7-point lead against the islanders.

As the game progressed, Jermaine Molo then got the Islanders their first point with a try followed by a conversion by Dallas Mohr leading the score to a tie game with 7-7.

After halftime, the Bulldogs went back with a goal to get the lead for the game. The Islanders with the same goal kept their strong defense tackling many Bulldogs players. Although The Bulldogs did not let the Islanders get in their head and are now on the lead with a 14-7 from Atapang’s try.

After multiple scrums, Molo scored a try again helping to cut the Bulldogs lead to 14-12.

As the game ended, Okkodo intercepted the throw in and pushed forward. With the intercept, Okkodo with the knock on gave the Islanders a chance to take it on.

Wendy’s Player of the Game, fullback, Deon Atapang (10th) then said, “Today was not a game we expected. We were very prepared during practice and were ready to get it on the field although our performance today was not the best.”
