SAN NICOLAS NETS FOUR GOALS IN WIN OVER ROYALS

Cougars dominate Royals in girls soccer action

By Carmen Gogue

The Academy Cougars came away with a big 5-2 win against the Notre Dame Royals in the Interscholastic Girls High School Football League Monday afternoon at the Guam High field.

Junior Hinengi San Nicolas achieved a haul netting four goals to lead the Cougars offense.

Although ND’s Maya Iriarte opened the competition early scoring the first goal of the game at the 2nd minute, San Nicolas was quick to return the favor scoring a goal at the 5th minute to tie up 1-1.

Just two minutes later, Academy set up for a corner kick where San Nicolas scored her second goal by a header at the 7th minute to give her team the lead at 2-1.

Royals goalie Arriah Arceo managed to cover her box from the spree of shots from the Cougars to lead her team on defense and keep the small lead within reach.

Academy continued to keep the ball in scoring range, finding San Nicolas getting two more goals at the 24th and 27th minutes of the game gaining a 4-1 lead.

ND finally gained some momentum from the speed of Iriarte as she sent a powerful kick to get her second goal at the 37th minute to improve her teams score 4-2. Both teams were unable to score for the remainder of the first half.

Following the half time, the Royals looked to have better defense alongside Arceo’s solid goal-keeping but it was their offense that struggled to get its footing.

With Arceo launching her kicks to send the ball forward for ND, the Cougars defense was too tough to break, providing their strikers scoring opportunities for the majority of the second half.

Senior Torie Rapadas scored a goal at the 73rd minute for a comfortable 5-2 triumph late in the final half with the Royals unable to keep up.
