The Okkodo Bulldogs bounced back from an opening season loss in the ISA High School Baseball League with a triumphant 17-4 win over the Sanchez Sharks Saturday afternoon at Okkodo.
The Sharks, which had its opener against ND postponed last week, were still getting used to playing on a big field after practices at JFK and Yigo, said manager Tony Yatar.
“I have a very young, inexperienced team that’s willing to learn, the last time that 95 percent of them played was on the small field, the little league field. So it was basic plays that they’re getting used to on a big field.”
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Nico Evaristo led off with a single and Michael Muna brought him home two batters later.
Though the Bulldogs loaded the bases right after, Shark pitcher Josiah John pitched out of the jam and got Albino Indalecio looking for the third out.
The Sharks answered with two runs of their own in the first inning.
Okkodo pitcher Paul Quenga started with three straight strikeouts in the first inning but had trouble with his pitching in the second. Quenga walked two and struck out two before a bases clearing single by Stephen Nauta.
The Bulldogs scored another three in the second and five more in the third to put the game out of reach.
Ruben San Nicolas relieved Quenga and walked his first batter, then Jayziah Sagun to ground out. He walked the next three batters too, allowing Jeremy Salinas to score. Izeiah Miner scored when San Nicolas walked his fifth batter of the inning but then notched a strikeout to end the threat.
The Sharks went three up, three down in the fifth and final inning on three straight San Nicolas strikeouts.
“This was a very good bounce back from the opener. I think our boys were just nervous,” said Okkodo manager Rhandy Munoz. “But we tweaked the lineup a little bit, found what we were looking for and knew that this is what we were gonna do. We’ll try it again next game and see how we can do.”
Okkodo coach Lance Borja said that the team fixed the errors that lost them their opening game by coming to practice and working hard.
“They showed out today and their performance today over last time was excellent. I’m proud of these guys.”
Evaristo finished the game and went 3-for-3 with a walk, three singles and four runs scored.
