GUAM READY FOR TAIPEI, THAILAND NEXT WEEK

Men’s basketball to play March 19 and 20 in Taipei

PRESS RELEASE – The Guam Men’s National Basketball Team has officially advanced to the final round of games in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, set to take place in Taipei from March 19 to 21. This marks a significant achievement for Guam basketball as the team continues its journey toward competing at the highest level in international basketball in the island’s history.

Guam has shown tremendous resilience and skill throughout the qualification process, demonstrating their capability to compete against some of the region’s strongest teams, including Japan, China, and Mongolia in Group C. Despite finishing with a 1-5 record in the Qualifiers over the last 12 months, Team Guam pulled through by eliminating Team Mongolia through the point spread. Guam put on epic performances in front of their fans, losing quality games at home to highly ranked national teams from Japan & China by 5 points and 8 points, respectfully. If Team Guam can qualify for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, they will also reach a new level of competition in the World Cup Qualification rounds from late 2025 to early 2027. These potential qualification rounds will include both home & away games!

According to Team Guam Head Coach, E.J. Calvo, “We have to stay focused on advancement and we have to take advantage of this opportunity now.” Calvo added, “It was incredible being able to bring this level of sports to Guam and compete. Our mission is to inspire our community that anything is possible.”

The final round of qualifiers in Taipei will determine the last qualifyied teams in the prestigious FIBA Asia Cup, where top teams from across the Oceania / Asia Region will face each other later this year. Guam will compete against Chinese Taipei and Thailand to qualify for The Cup. With a blend of experienced players and rising stars, the Guam squad is prepared to leave it all on the court in pursuit of victory on March 19th & 20th. Calvo added, “We believe we belong at this level and must show the world by advancing to the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup!”

Fans are encouraged to follow the team’s progress on social media. Additional details, including game schedules and viewing options, will be shared in the coming weeks.
