PRESS RELEASE – The Marianas Open Jiu-Jitsu Federation, in formal partnership with the Office of the Acting Governor of Guam, marked the successful turnover of competition-grade athletic mats to Okkodo High School on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. The ceremonial presentation, held at the school’s gymnasium, commemorated a significant investment in student-athlete development and educational enrichment.
Valued at approximately $20,000, the athletic mats—professionally measured at 50 feet by 50 feet—were donated to support Okkodo High School’s resident athletic programs, including Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, and other mat-based sports. This initiative demonstrates a shared commitment between public leadership and private sector advocates to enhance safe, high-quality training environments within Guam’s educational institutions.
The event was attended by Acting Governor Josh F. Tenorio; Mr. Steve Shimizu, President of the Marianas Open Jiu-Jitsu Federation; Principal Rita Flores; faculty and administrative representatives; and student-athletes from Okkodo’s Jiu-Jitsu program.
“This contribution is not merely about equipment—it is an investment in the aspirations and potential of our young practitioners,” said Steve Shimizu, President of the Marianas Open Jiu-Jitsu Federation. “Through this donation, we affirm our commitment to providing student-athletes with a safe and professional environment to pursue excellence, both on and off the mat. We are proud to stand alongside Okkodo High School in fostering the next generation of leaders through sport.”
The ceremony concluded with the formal transfer of the mats to the school, underscoring the power of public-private collaboration in building meaningful opportunities for Guam’s youth through education, athletics, and community engagement.
Special thanks are extended to Mr. John Camaya and Principal Rita Flores of Okkodo High School, Mr. James Atkins of East-West Rental Center, Mr. Lloyd Cubacub—Marianas Open athlete and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Guam, and the dedicated teachers and staff of Okkodo High School. Their collective support and coordination were instrumental in making this initiative possible.
