The 2025 ISA Boys High School Tennis Finals concluded on a sunny Monday afternoon at the Guam National Tennis Center. The players made their way through the singles and doubles brackets last week to reach the final games, looking to secure a medal.
Singles
The most anticipated match of the day saw two teammates from Guam Adventist Academy, Wyatt Oh and Joshua Jung, face off in the singles final on center court. Oh, the top seed and defending champion, extended his reign to a fourth consecutive high school singles title after a tough battle. Jung, only a sophomore and playing his first year of high school tennis, showed impressive resilience but ultimately fell 8-5. Both players switched between the first and second seeds throughout the season and went into the playoffs undefeated.
To the surprise of many, Jung took the lead at the start with his hard and consistent strokes while it seemed as though Oh was still warming up. Jung was up 3-1, putting pressure on his experienced opponent.
During the moment Oh was trying to keep his composure, “I was feeling a little nervous. I just thought I gotta get the next one… not think about the past.”
From then on, the match was kept tight with Oh slowly taking more games and gaining the lead. Both players were focused and eager to win despite playing their own teammate. Ultimately, Oh’s powerful serve gave him point after point, combined with Jung hitting balls barely out, allowing Oh to take the championship.
“It feels good. I’m happy that I was able to achieve this feat in my career,” said Oh on his win.
In the third place match, third seed Skyler Blas (Tiyan) defeated fourth seed David San Agustin (JFK) 8-3, claiming the bronze medal after a strong, composed performance.
Doubles
The doubles final took place at the same time with the Angels Jonathon Cho/Joshua Elidok defeating the John F. Kennedy Islanders Ryder Torres/Zayne Ayangco. The Angels, being the top seed, fought hard against the strong Islander duo, and won with a score of 8-4.
The Islanders took the momentum in the beginning, going 3-1 against the Angels. However, the Angels only allowed them one more game after that to win 8-4, giving Cho a back-to-back doubles title.
The doubles bronze medal match took place at the John F. Kennedy courts with the fifth seed Islanders Segun Oh/Ethan Ando defeating the higher third seed Simon Sanchez Sharks Aldryn Ednaco/Rynier Di Ramos 8-4 to take third place.
The girls’ playoffs kicked off on Monday as well and they will continue playing this week up until the finals on Thursday, followed by the award ceremony to conclude the season.
