women’s soccer/basketball player wins award

PRESS RELEASE – The University of Guam Triton Athletics and Field House Department held their annual Student-Athlete Awards Reception last night in the UOG Calvo Field House.

There were about 100 student-athletes, parents and friends in the field house for the event. Associate Dean Gerald A.B. Cruz, School of Technology & Student Services for Guam Community College, was in attendance at the event.

Amanda Uncangco of Women’s Soccer and Women’s Basketball took home the top award as the Student-Athlete of the Year.

The event started with the host of the Triton Sports Zone podcast, Rozanna Claros, MC of the reception, welcoming everyone to the event and then Kailey Quidachay, the President of the Student-Athlete Association giving a welcome as well and then Kailey explaining what her student organization does for the University, and she wants all the athletes to join the group.

Doug Palmer, Athletics Director, then updated everyone on what Triton Athletics did in 2024-25 academic year, which was highlighted by the men’s volleyball team winning the Triton Men’s Volleyball League in the fall season of 2024 with a perfect 7-0 record and only losing 2 sets all season. The women’s volleyball team had a good fall as well, finishing 3rd in the Lady Triton Volleyball League with a 5-2 record.

Then the coaches gave out four awards to each team and the awards included Best Defense, Best Offense, the Triton Award and Most Valuable Player. The teams are Men’s and Women’s Volleyball coached by Joey Tedpahogo, Women’s Basketball coached by Cil Olandez, Men’s Basketball coached Argie Flores and Men’s and Women’s Soccer, coached by Hark Galarion.

The Most Valuable Players then qualified for the Student-Athlete of the Year award and Amanda Uncangco was selected by Doug Palmer as the Student-Athlete of the Year for 2024-25.

This year, two Guam Community College students won two Most Valuable Player awards for Men’s and Women’s Volleyball.
