WOMEN’S TENNIS IN VIETNAM FOR BILLIE JEAN KING CUP

The Guam National Tennis Federation (GNTF) sent four young women to represent the island at the Billie Jean King Cup in Phan Thiet, Vietnam, taking place from November 10th-15th. Competing in the Asia/Oceania Group 3, these talented players have almost reached the midpoint in this exciting international event. 

This competition was originally scheduled to be held in Jordan back in June, but was delayed due to security issues and travel disruptions. A new team, headed by Torgun Smith, had to be quickly created to prepare for this delayed event. The team includes one of Guam’s very best, Fremont Gibson, along with Leila Mercado who both represented Guam at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup and were part of the original team headed to Jordan. The other two members are Charlotte Oh and Leah San Agustin who will be representing Guam on the adult national level for the very first time. Rachel San Agustin was also planning to join them, but unfortunately fell ill the day of departure. 

As for the competition itself, seven countries were split into two pools for a round robin play from Monday to Wednesday. Guam is the fourth seed and was put in a pool with Laos, Brunei, and Jordan. 

On Monday, Guam fell 1-2 to Jordan in a close matchup. Mercado stepped up first as the #2 singles. She lost 6-1, 6-0 in a tough match against a strong woman, but played with heart nonetheless. Gibson had a more favorable outcome as the #1 singles for Guam. She played with precision and power to win an impressive match 6-4, 6-2. 

“I enjoy being able to represent Guam year after year and am grateful to be and compete in my position at the BJKC level,” said Gibson.

With the singles split, the doubles match became the decider. Gibson got right back on the court with Oh in a nail-biting match. Both teams played with high intensity, but it was Gibson who shone at the net. After the teams split sets 7–5, 5–7, the outcome came down to a tense tiebreaker. The crowd cheered for every point, but Guam ultimately fell just short, 9–11, in the final frame.

The following day Guam rebounded with a hard-earned 2-1 win against Brunei. Mercado put all her effort out on the court in a long, grueling singles match, but lost in three sets: 7-6, 4-6, 2-6. 

“It was a hard fought match, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Guam,” Leila shared.

Gibson delivered once again in her singles match, winning 6-1, 6-3 with ease. She took control of the match, hitting shots that flew past her opponent. Again, it came down to the doubles match. Gibson and Oh struggled to find their rhythm in the first set, but picked it up in the second. Carrying that momentum into the tiebreak, they closed it out to win 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. 

Oh shared, “It’s amazing to play at this level for the first time. The matches have been really exciting and I’m so thankful to have Monti as my partner because she’s so skilled.” Gibson added, “I mean, so far both the singles and doubles matches have been a lot of fun. I’m lucky to have the chance to play all the matches I do and enjoy being out there representing Guam!”

The Billie Jean King Cup is one of the few tournaments with on-court coaching permitted. This makes Coach Smith’s presence extremely vital for every match. He shared, “Overall, we are doing very well, but I must say the expectation was to do very well.” He also added, “There is an extra bit of pressure representing Guam for the world cup. Proud of all the girls on the team for their part in how we’ve gone so far.”

Guam’s record is now 1-1 and will play Laos on Wednesday who has yet to lose a match in this event. Let’s continue to give these women our full support as they represent the island.
