YI NAMED NEW UOG BASKETBALL COACH

Other coaches retained from last school year

PRESS RELEASE – Jimmy Yi was named the new men’s basketball coach at the University of Guam on Tuesday. Yi replaces Argie Flores who decided not to return to the UOG team after serving two years as the head coach.

Yi is a basketball coach on Guam with over 10 years of experience and has served both as a national team’s coach and a high school coach as well. Currently, he is serving as travel team coach with his Y Impact business and just had a team traveling to Vietnam and playing last week.

He has served as boys basketball coach at Father Duenas Memorial School for 3 years as head coach with 2 championships and served as assistant coach for 5 years. He coached Academy of Our Lady of Guam for 5 years and won one high school championship and finished runner-up for 4 years.

He was the head coach for Guam men’s national team in 2024 that won gold in the Micronesia Games. He was the assistant coach for Guam women’s national team from 2014-1019 and was the Guam junior national team head coach for 4 FIBA tournaments over 5 years.

He served as the head coach for the FIBA 3X3 Championships in Hungary in 2015 with the Guam U18 team.

Said UOG Athletics Director Doug Palmer, “First we would like to thank Argie Flores for having a competitive team over the last two years and keeping a lot of kids playing for UOG, but now we are excited about Jimmy Yi as our coach. Hopefully Jimmy can recruit some athletes to play for UOG and bring some more success to our program.”

The team will begin play in the competitive Triton League in October, but the team will prepare by playing in some community tournaments before that.

UOG also announced that Cil Olandez will remain the women’s basketball coach and Joey Tedpahogo will also remain as both the men’s and women’s volleyball coach for 2025-26 academic year. UOG will only sponsor four sports in 2025-26, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s volleyball
