GUAM CLOSES OUT WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS 0-6

The New Zealand “Tall Blacks” defeated Team Guam 129-75 on Monday night in Auckland, New Zealand. Following a double-overtime victory against the Philippines that secured their spot in the next round, New Zealand hosted a Guam team coming off a loss to Australia. With Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines advancing from Group A, Guam has been eliminated. However, reaching this tournament marks a significant milestone for the program.

Sam Mannenga led New Zealand with 25 points, shooting 13-of-15 from the field. New Zealand held a 63-38 lead at halftime and maintained control despite several runs from Guam.

“Our defense was our Achilles’ heel tonight. They did a good job rebounding, and we were unable to match their physicality,” said Guam head coach Mekeli Wesley. “They are a great team and definitely flexed their muscle on their home court.”

For Guam, center Jonathan Galloway recorded 21 points and seven rebounds. BJ Freeman added 18 points and a game-high five steals, while Earnest Ross Jr. contributed 11 points. Guards Takumi Simon and Alexander Kamai each added nine points.

Galloway noted that while the team showed flashes of strong play, they must work on consistency. “We saw some good moments, but we need to play like that for the entire game,” he said.

Looking ahead, Coach Wesley emphasized roster development. “Our next step is solidifying our roster. We have about six players living on-island, while the rest are across the globe,” Wesley said, adding that he is encouraged by the development of the team’s younger players.
