A big showdown between the two southern teams pitted long-time Matua division contenders of the Triple J Guam Youth Football League Sunday afternoon down in Talofofo.
At the end of the exciting game, the re-named Haga’ Outlaws defeated the Southern Cowboys 30–20.
First Half
Players of the Game: Rio Reyes and Jayvier Quintanilla
The Outlaws started fast after the opening kickoff, with Jayvier Quintanilla helping move the chains early. Soon after, Joe Fausto broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run to put the first points on the board.
The Cowboys responded with quarterback Ezekiel-Ray Maysho connecting with Jayden Cruz for key gains, but the drive ended in a turnover. On defense, the Cowboys had solid moments, with safety Makoa Aguigui reading the passing game well and Cruz making multiple tackles.
The Outlaws kept control when Raymond Omapas broke loose for a 90-yard touchdown run, extending the lead. The Cowboys continued to fight back, mixing up their offense and finding some success, but the Outlaws defense led by Omapas and Quintanilla kept them from building momentum.
The Cowboys eventually scored when Aguigui caught a pass, broke a tackle, and reached the end zone.
The Outlaws answered quickly with a touchdown from Quintanilla, while Jun-Luis Suzuki added a key sack on defense and Rio Reyes helped move the offense with strong runs.
Cowboys quarterback Maysho scored a touchdown and also successfully made a field goal, bringing the score closer.
A big moment came when Omapas returned a kickoff for a touchdown, helping the Outlaws take control heading into halftime with the score being 24-14.
Second Half
The Outlaws kicked off to start the second half, giving the Cowboys the first possession. Right away, Raehlyn Brub was everywhere on defense, setting the tone with big stops and constant pressure that kept the Cowboys offense off balance. On offense, Brub was just as impactful, picking up strong runs and fighting through defenders alongside Reyes to help move the ball down the field.
On the Cowboys’ opening, Cruz took in a catch but was quickly forced out of bounds and later a missed pass turned into a costly turnover, giving the Outlaws another opportunity.
The Cowboys tried to respond on defense, but Brub continued to make her presence known, fighting through defenders and powering forward for a first down. Throughout the quarter, Quintanilla, Reyes, and Brub stayed active on both sides of the ball, constantly involved in the action and keeping the intensity high.
Maysho looked to connect with Cruz again on several passing attempts, but the Outlaws defense kept closing every window. Both teams traded strong defensive plays, with hard hits, tight coverage, and no room to breathe on either side.
Despite all the action and physical defense, neither team could break through, and the third quarter ended in a defensive battle with no new scores.
To start the fourth quarter strong, the Cowboys found the end zone with a touchdown from Cruz, bringing the score closer at 24–20 in favor of the Outlaws.
On the kickoff, Reyes made a strong return, but Koldha Chun came up with a big tackle to bring him down. Chun continued to step up on defense, making key stops and keeping pressure on the Cowboys offense. Even so, Reyes stayed heavily involved throughout the drive, getting the ball consistently as he took control of the offense and pushed hard for another scoring opportunity.
With about four minutes left, the Outlaws were close to the end zone when disaster struck, Reyes fumbled near the goal line, and Maysho jumped on it for the Cowboys, shutting down what looked like a sure scoring opportunity and swinging momentum back their way.
On defense, Quintanilla continued to shine, reading plays perfectly, breaking up passes, and making key stops in both the run and passing game. He was constantly around the ball, making his presence felt every snap.
In the final minute, Reyes answered back in a big way. He broke through the defense and powered into the end zone for another touchdown, sealing the game and helping the Outlaws finish strong with a 30–20 victory.
Players of the Game, Jayvier Quintanilla and Rio Reyes, delivered outstanding performances on both sides of the field, consistently making big plays when their team needed them most.
When asked what this win meant to them and what they will carry into next week’s game, Quintanilla responded “For the Outlaws, it was a great team win that showed what we can accomplish when we stay locked in and play together.” and “I would say better defense into next week’s game. This win reminded me to trust myself, teammates, keep working hard, and do whatever I can to help the Outlaws succeed.”
