After going undefeated in all 12 regular season matchups, FD Friars senior Redge Camacho completed his journey in Boys High School Golf claiming the 2012 All-Island Championship Thursday at the Admiral Nimitz Golf Course in Radio Barrigada. After already claiming the team Championship, St. Thomas’ Rachael Peterson added icing to the cake claiming the Girls title.

“It feels really good to finish undefeated, I’ve been waiting for this for awhile,” admitted FD’s Camacho.

Unlike the regular season format of match play, the All-Island format was based on stroke count, with the lowest score winning. The golfers played all 18 holes without the usual time-limit.

“It’s a lot different because I was by myself and not with my team, but I felt good,” added Camacho.

Rounding out the top three was St. Thomas’ Spencer Steffy, who finished just two counts shy of first at 78 strokes.

In girls play, the Lions’ Rachael Peterson finished with a final stroke count of 84, topping the other ten female golfers. “I feel good,” said a shy Peterson.

Coming in second was JFK Islanders’ Tess Suh who finished with an 87. Claiming the bronze medal was Peterson’s teammate Juna Otani who ended with 92 strokes.

St. Thomas crowned Champions

With a back and forth battle with the FD Friars, the St. Thomas Lions were able to do what no other team in the past seven years could, dethrone the champs.

“It feels good to break the streak, but I don’t think about those things,” admitted Lions coach Teddy Gogue. “We just played and believed in ourselves, that’s what we did each game.”

The Lions emerged as the dominant force winning both the boys and girls championships without a single defeat.

“I’m really proud of these kids, it’s been a long process but overall I have faith in these kids and they did really well,” added coach Gogue.

With a relatively young team, the Lions will be a force to be reckoned with in years to come.
