SUMMER PADDLING KICKS OFF

[sixcol_five_last]

By Errol “DynamiX” Alegre Jr.

After a one week delay, the 2012 Summer Paddling Series kicked off at full throttle with 12 teams facing off against each other through the rough currents of Malesso Pier.

To start the days races, the women’s open division teams put the long awaited wait to rest as they sprinted through the 1200-meter course in competitive fashion. Taking first place with a time of 11.72 minutes was team Kepuha, followed by Taotao Galaide and Tulos with times of 12.68 minutes and 13.31 minutes respectively. The women showed that the rough waters and strong currents could indeed be tamed as the original plan – where the younger “Nene” division paddlers were set to start the races – was changed due to safety precautions.

Following the women’s open division was the closely contested men’s open division, which ended with all six teams finishing with overall times that were separated by no more than one minute. In the second round of the event, the top three teams – Animun Tasi, Guatdan Tasi, and Taotao Galaide – were at each others necks as they all fought to finish first. After Animun Tasi won the first round with a commanding ten-second lead, Guatdan Tasi stepped it up in the second, finishing first by less than a boat-length ahead; Taotao Galaide tried their best but came up short as they took third in both rounds. In the end, Animun Tasi took the hard-earned first place with an overall time of 10.26 minutes, followed by Guatdan Tasi with a time of 10.35 minutes and Taotao Galaide who came in at 10.48 minutes.

The paddling event continued with the mix divisions, junior divisions, and the Nene division but with certain race adjustments due to the one-hour late start; instead of having the open divisions compete in another 1200-meter race, the second round was shortened to 1000 meters. The Nene division continued their 250-meter races.
