The Southern High Dolphins walked their way to a 5-1 win over the GW Geckos Monday afternoon in IIAAG high school baseball action. Teams were sent home after the fourth inning as daylight began to fade, diminishing the Geckos’ chance at a comeback.
Only picking up three hits all game, the Dolphins’ took the win with unearned runs. Southern’s Johnny Aguon advanced to third after a hit from Gabriel San Nicolas, but a fielding error allowed Aguon to run home in the top of the second to tie the game at one-all.
The Dolphins scored the rest of their points in the top of the third, after a Geckos pitcher change. An error on GW’s second baseman allowed Cody Terlaje to get on base. As both players were hit by pitches, Ernie Lobaton and Isaiah Cruz advanced to first on their respective at-bat opportunities. With this, the bases were loaded and another walk was granted to the Dolphins, letting Terlaje stroll past home plate and the Dolphins were up 2-1. Another error and two walks brought in Lobaton and Nicolas Cruz to put the score at 4-1. Consecutive errors by the defense let Nicolas Cruz cross home plate for the Dolphins’ final score.
Christian Borja scored the only run for the Geckos right at the start of the game. While Borja was trying to steal, Southern’s pitcher Vance Kaneshi overthrew to second baseman Nicolas Cruz. Another error from second to third allowed Borja to make it home.
In other games:
The Guam High Panthers blanked the Okkodo Bulldogs 6-0 after five innings. Eddie Ray Garza pitched all five innings of no-hit ball with nine strikeouts for the Panthers.
Guam High’s offense was led by Caine Madison, Robit Cabe and Kyle Dougherty with two hits apiece. Cabe had two doubles while Dogherty drove in two runs.
The FD Friars and defending champion Sanchez Sharks were rained out.
