They are the champs for a reason! The Southern High Lady Dolphins add win number 13 to their undefeated streak as they fought their way back to defeat the GW Geckos 8-7 Wednesday evening at the Southern High field in Girls Softball.
The Geckos went to work right off the bat quickly after a 2 RBI single into center field by Celeene Mendiola brought in Wynette Takeo and Coleen Quinata putting GW up 4-0 at the bottom of the second inning. The Geckos would build on this steady lead for six innings going up 7-4, putting themselves in a position to win and pull off a huge upset.
However the Dolphins defense stepped up at the top of the seventh and denied the Geckos any chances of scoring and possibly handing them their first loss in two seasons. With the momentum on their side once again Southern were looking to close things out.
Tamisha Fejeran would get things going for the Dolphins hitting an impressive RBI triple deep into right field at the bottom of the seventh. Fejeran would later steal home off of an unfortunate error made by the Gecko defense making the score 7-5. Sasha Dirige would follow up on the next play with an RBI double that sent home Larayn Leon Guerrero. Misty Santos would later send Dirige home after a line drive. Santos later stole home and sealed the victory for the defending champs.
“They were the toughest team that we wanted to beat, and they made us fight hard,” said Dirige when asked about the opposing team. “We knew we could win, and if it takes us all seven innings, then so be it,” said Dirige who did an excellent job for the Dolphins hitting two RBIs.
