The Annual Summer Jam Basketball Tournament kicked off the first day of July with an evening triple header of games at the Tamuning Gym. The heavy-loaded Typhoons I team got off to a hot start and flashy finish as they unloaded on Team Inferno to defeat them 109-44 in the first game of the 18 plus Men’s Varsity division.
Joe Blas led the way for the Typhoons with a game-high 25 points with teammate, and lights-out shooter, JP Cruz right behind Blas with 22 points. Derrick Royster had 18 for the Typhoons and capped off the final minute of the game with two one-handed dunks that had the crowd rain in some cheers.
Dave Santos led Inferno in scoring with 17 points while getting a lift from teammate Mark Taijeron with 13 points.
The Typhoons jumped out to a 23-9 run in the first 10 minutes and closed out the first half leading 49-22. The second half was dominated by the sweet shooting of Cruz who hit three-straight jumpers to add to the already big lead at 92-40. Blas put the Typhoons over the 100-point mark with a layup in the final minutes of the game also reaching his 25th point.
Royster then got two clean looks at a dunk which he performed in sequence to get some cheers from the fans.
The Typhoons I team does not play until again till next week while Team Inferno will play Sky High on Wednesday night.
Andersen Bombers 80, Agat MO 39
The layup line was more like the dunk line for the Andersen Bombers as members of the team took to the skies minutes before their game against Agat, exhibiting a series of dunks while living up to their high flying team name. The height and stingy defense of the Bombers allowed them to coast to a big win over Agat MO in the second game of the evening.
