Due to heavy rain, the Air Force Reserve and Team Mangachong match-up in the Guam Senior Winter Baseball League was called after two-and-a-half innings of play Thursday night at the Paseo Stadium. Mangachong was leading 7-2 prior to the call by the umpires.

The top of the third started off with a bang as Mangachong’s Johnny Arriola cranked one out of the park on a solo homerun. Then a few batters later, Tony Munoz drove home Kirk Cruz and Pete Babauta on a two RBI single to center field. The game was then called moments later due bad field conditions.

Mangachong wasted no time getting on board in the top of the first inning. With runners on second and third, a huge hit by Kirk Guerrero drove home Ray Guerrero and Mike Paulino on the two RBI double.

The Air Force Reserve answered with a run on their own in the bottom of the first. Short stop Ron Shimizu ran home off a RBI single by catcher Jess Bamba to cut the lead to one run.

Mangachong continued to extend their lead in the top of the second inning as Frankie Diego stole home on an overthrow to third base.

The second run for the Air Force Reserve came in the bottom of the second inning when Kevin Shimizu ran home on a throwing error.

No continuation date has been set but the match-up ended in the top of the third inning with Mangachong at bat with one out and a runner on first.

Guam Senior Winter Baseball League action continues Saturday at the Paseo Stadium.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
