PRESS RELEASE – Budweiser Amateur Baseball League featured two games over Mother’s Day weekend with the Northern A’s staying unbeaten at 7-0 and the Vipers snapping the Rays five game win streak.

3pm – Vipers 5, Rays 2

WP: Brandon SantosLP: Jay Santos

SZPOG:  Brandon Santos W, CG, 7IP, 2K, 7H, ER & Gerald Santos 3-4, 3B, R, 3RBI

Saturday opening matchup the Vipers got great pitching from starter Brandon Santos who allowed no walks and only one earned run over seven innings to hold off the streaking Rays for a 5-2 win.  Gerald Santos accounted for 4 of the 5 Vipers runs going 3 for 4 with a triple, run scored and three rbi to lead the Vipers attack on offense against Rays starter Jay Santos.

A good game with great defense and solid pitching on both sides of the diamond in the end it was the bat of Gerald Santos that made the difference.  Santos would put the Vipers on the board in the top of the 1st inning with a two rbi single scoring Steve Diego and Fred Malace to take an early 2-0 lead.

Santos would strike again for the Vipers in the top of the 4th inning with a bullet to deep center for an rbi triple and Charlie Cabarles would knock him in with a sac fly to give the Vipers a 4-0 lead.

The Rays would get on the board in the bottom half of the 4th inning with consecutive singles by Chad Palomo, Dom Cruz and JQ Quintanilla cutting the lead to 4-2.  But that was all Vipers starter Santos would allow pounding the strike zone with a nasty curveball keeping the Rays off balance and not allowing any easy baserunners with walks retiring the final 9 batters to give the Vipers  a big 5-2 win over the 2nd place Rays.

Brandon Santos and Gerald Santos share Strike Zone Player of the Game for the Vipers who improve to 4-5 on the season.  The Rays winner of their last five games lose only their second game of the season dropping to 6-2 but still hold the 2nd seed in the Amateur standings.

6pm – Northern A’s 14, AXE Stars 3

WP: Jesse MinerLP:  Ray Leon Guerrero

Strike Zone POG: Jesse Miner 5IP, 10K, 4ER, 3H & RJ Joe 3-3, 2 doubles, R, 3RBI

The undefeated Northern A’s continued their hot start with a 14-3 five inning mercy rule win over the AXE Stars in the Saturday nightcap at Leo Palace Park.

A’s starter Jesse Miner was dominate striking out the first 5 batters of the game and finished with ten K’s in only five innings. Miner would share Strike Zone POG with RJ Joe who led an explosive offense going 3 for 3 with two doubles, run scored and three rbi.  The A’s pounded out seventeen hits as a team with five players collecting at least two hits apiece.

The Stars down 10-0 going into the bottom of the 4th inning rallied with four runs to stage a late comeback with consecutive hits by Dootch Naputi, Malcolm Chaco and Hank Salas sparking the rally, but it would be too little too late for the Stars.

The A’s would tack on four more runs in the top of the 5th inning for a 14-3 lead and Miner would strike out the side in the bottom of the 5th to give the A’s the 14-3 five inning mercy rule win.   The A’s stay perfect at 7-0 with the win and the Stars drop to 3-6.

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
