UFC MANILA: 14 THINGS TO KNOW

Here are 10 things you should know heading into tonight’s UFC Fight Night 66 in Manila.

#1 Urijah Faber’s first MMA loss came from Tyson Griffin in September 2005. Griffin came to Guam four months later and beat Melchor Manibusan in Fury 5 at the UOG Field House. Griffin’s first loss would come from Frankie Edgar one year later.

#2 Korea’s Hyun Gyu Lim won the PXC welterweight title in July 2012 with a submission win over Ryan Bigler in PXC 32. ‘The Ace’ signed with the UFC shortly thereafter. Lim fought four times in the PXC and once in Saipan’s Rites of Passage.

#3 Jon Tuck and Jon Delos Reyes fought on the same card on PXC 28 November 2011 in Manila, both coming away with first round knock outs.UFC Manila credentials 2

#4 Both Tuck and Delos Reyes earned UFC contracts despite not making The Ultimate Fighter cut.

#5 Mark Munoz, making his final appearance in the Octagon tonight, made a guest appearance at PXC 29 in February 2012.

#6 Delos Reyes’ opponent, Roldan Sangcha-An, won his lone PXC fight in September 2013 before signing with the UFC.

#7 Phil ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Davis, who is a teammate of Baby Joe Taimanglo at MMA Alliance in San Diego, will corner Luke Barnatt.

#8 Tuck cornerman Vince ‘Ever Since’ Salvador is also a striking coach at MMA Alliance.

#9 Delos Reyes’ last lost was to Japan standout Kyoji Horiguchi last September. Horiguchi quickly earned a flyweight title shot where he lost to Demetrious Johnson on April 25th by armbar with :01 second left in the fight. Johnson is currently in Manila making promotional appearances for this fight.

#10 In Tuck’s debut at UFC Macau (November 10, 2012), UFC announcer Bruce Buffer asked GSPN’s Patrick Lujan, “How do you pronounce Super Saiyan?”. Lujan’s response, “Super Saiyan?” (shrugging his shoulder)

#11 This is reporter Jay Leon Guerrero’s 10th UFC event to watch, his first to cover for GSPN.

#12 An estimated 1000 fans have flown in from Guam to watch UFC Manila.

#13 Delos Reyes and Sangcha-An will be the first UFC fight ever between two Filipinos.

#14 Delos Reyes, Sonny Chargualaf (JDR’s trainer) and Tuck were all next door neighbors in Chalan Pago at one time.
