MONSTER ENERGY MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUND 7

Press Release – Guam International Raceway Motorcycle and Atv Corporation

2021 Monster Energy Guam Motocross Championships Round 7

Round 7 of the 10 round 2021 Monster Energy Guam Motocross Championships was held this past Sunday at the Guam International Raceway in Yigo. Racing kicked off at 11:30am with the course conditions wet, swampy and muddy which only added to the challenge and excitement of the event. Classes ranged from several sized kids minibike and atv classes along with a women’s minibike class up to the larger fuller sized machines of the schoolboy, Novice, 250, 450, Open and Over 40 Vet classes.

Highlights and results

In heat one of two in the Open Motorcycle class the defending champ and current points leader #1 Little Jon Aguon who was aboard a Team Cycles Plus Kawasaki churned his way straight to the front to take the lead with the #7 of JR Cepeda aboard his Yamaha in second and #85 Blaze Aiken on a Kawasaki in third. With conditions being so muddy rider vision was being compromised and being in front of the pack of the mud slingers was an advantage. Aguon who was up front took that advantage and scored the heat one win with Cepeda second and Aiken in third.

In heat two the #1 of Aguon was once more back up front with #7 Cepeda right behind him. The two along with #85 Blaze Aiken put on an exciting tactical race with Cepeda making several challenges on the leader only to be rejected with a fire hose of mud to the face from the rear tire of Aguon’s Kawasaki which had disabled Cepeda’s goggle system and ruined his vision. The #85 Kawasaki of Blaze Aiken back in third saw the now vision handicapped Cepeda start to flounder and like a shark that could smell the blood in the water he immediately attacked the Yamaha rider mercilessly. Cepeda refused to just give up but with his vision being compromised the inevitable pass by Aiken was made.  Aguon took the win and the round 7 overall with Blaze Aiken second overall and Cepeda soldiering in for third. The rest of the field finished respectively as follows.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
