SHIROMA WINS SAIPAN’S A FLIGHT

15-year-old shines in NMC Golf Open

15-year-old Junior Golf standout and Guam National Team member Stüssy Shiroma carded a +4 (76) to capture 1st place in the A Flight this past Saturday at Lao Lao Golf Resort in Saipan.

Shiroma edged out former Guam resident Amier Younis, who also shot a 76, via scorecard playoff to take the win.

The Annual (NMC) Golf Open is Saipan’s longest running and most prestigious golf tournament attracting an international field of 144 golfers.

Shiroma registered three birdies and nearly holed out on the 190-yard par 3 #11 hole East Course with a tee shot to 10 inches.

“Stüssy has only been playing golf for three years, but is no stranger to international competition. He was a world champion in Jiu Jitsu at the age of eight and a National Champion in Japan and the Philippines. However, this was his first significant win since crossing over to golf,” said his proud dad Tim Shiroma.

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
