Makayla Atoigue is a national champion!

Over the weekend, a trio of former Guam high school rugby stars participated in the Collegiate Rugby Champion National 7’s tournament in Washington DC.

In the Women’s Premier Cup, Former Notre Dame Royal Makayla Atoigue and the Brown University Bears made a deep run, eventually narrowly earning a 21-19 victory over Army and securing National Champions honors in the Collegiate Rugby Championship Premier Division.

Atoigue has quickly become a contributor on a powerhouse Brown University squad and has earned a national championship in just her first year of collegiate rugby. Atoigue joins Alejandra Ada as the only other Guam female athlete to accomplish such a feat in such a short amount of time.

“I’m still at a loss for words. Huge shout out to my coach staff. They’ve pushed so hard this season and challenged us to play a style of rugby none of us had played before. Good things take time and hard work pays off.”

– Brown freshman Makayla Atoigue

In the Men’s Premier Cup, Gavin Bejerana and the University of Rio Grande RedStorms were bounced in the first round while Matias Calvo, co-captain of the Dartmouth Big Greens, suffered a loss in the second round.
