PACIFIC GAMES HALFWAY THROUGH

Sunday is rest day in the Solomon Islands where the 17th Pacific Games are being held.

After the first week of competition, Guam has garnered nine medals so far: three weightlifting gold from Nicola Lagatao, a historic gold in men’s team tennis, two silver from weightlifter Ethan Elwell, a heart-breaking silver from the men’s basketball team and two bronze from weightlifter Jacinta Sumagaysay.

There were a couple of Guam national records broken in the swimming pool, but none were able to step on the podium.

Looking ahead for Week 2

  • Tennis singles has Camden Camacho and Fremont Gibson as the only survivors moving on to Monday’s quarterfinals. Guam is still alive in the women’s doubles and men’s doubles.
  • Track & Field gets underway on Monday and runs throughout the week.
  • Guam men’s 3×3 basketball starts their defense of the gold medal on Wednesday.
  • Va’a gets rowing on Monday with the shorter events before the longer courses happen later in the week.
  • Triathlon will hold its super sprints on Thursday and the aquathlon on Friday.

Some notable sports that Guam traditionally participated in but are absent at these Games are: archery, boxing, golf, judo, table tennis, and volleyball.
