AGUON, OSBORN LEAD GECKOS TO VICTORY OVER ISLANDERS

GW denies JFK a win in close game

By Carmen Gogue

The George Washington Geckos defeated the John F. Kennedy Islanders 66-59 in the ISA Boys Basketball League Monday night at JFK.

Peter Aguon and DJ Osborn both chipped in 17 points to secure the win in a close matchup over the Islanders. Osborn’s steady scoring and Aguon’s five three-pointers, three of which were in the fourth quarter, sealed the victory for the Geckos.

JFK’s Kalden Kustos opened the fourth quarter with a huge steal and fired the home crowd up with two back to back layups to gain a 49-47 two-point lead but Geckos sharpshooter Aguon is a force to be reckoned with.

Aguon answered right back, firing triple three-point shots shutting down the chances of an advantage for the Islanders with less than a minute left in the game.

“It’s just confidence man, like coach said keep shooting and don’t be afraid of the moment.”

– GW sharpshooter Peter Aguon

Kairos Orchiro also added 11 points for the Geckos. Jordan Madrazo led the Islanders with 13 points and Kustos added 10 points.

Strong Start

From the tip off, the Geckos were determined to lead early, gaining first possession and points on the board. Consistent scoring and teamwork led the Geckos to a 20-14 lead to end the first quarter.

Second quarter was a change of pace for the Islanders with the Madrazo twins’ effortless assists and scoring finishes to give the JFK its first lead of the game ending the first half at 38-35 over GW.

The Geckos were determined to come out on top in the second half. Osborn notes the game plan coming into the second half was fueled by teamwork.

“We really just wanted to get the ball moving and just keep looking for each other.”

– GW leader DJ Osborn

Junior Varsity Game

The Geckos also beat the Islanders in the junior varsity match 62-54. Saki Iontan led the Geckos with 18 points.

OTHER GAMES
