CHIEF OF THE REEF TOURNEY PRESERVES FISHING CULTURE

Top Water and Jigging divisions draw 58 participants

PRESS RELEASE – Reef Pursuit International was thrilled to announce the 2nd annual Chief of the Reef shore top water casting and jigging tournament, taking place along the stunning shores of Guam from September 18 to 22. This exciting event honored the art of fishing, culminating in an award ceremony on September 22 at the Ypao Main Pavilion, where the most skilled fishermen and fisherwomen were celebrated for their remarkable catches using poppers, stick baits, or jig lures.

Reef Pursuit International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving fishing culture, organizes various tournaments, workshops, and community outreach events. These initiatives aim to bring the community together and foster an appreciation for traditional fishing practices.

Kevin Rivera, President of RPI, expressed his delight, stating, “It was a weekend of fishing, camaraderie, and sharing our culture and ways of fishing with other fishermen and fisherwomen from Korea and Japan.”

The 2024 Chief of the Reef tournament featured 58 participants, including international competitors from Korea and Japan. The competition was fierce, but the following individuals emerged victorious:

Chief of the Reef Division (Top Water and Jigging Division)

1st Place: Kurt Meno – Giant Trevally, 23.5 lbs
2nd Place: AJ Padilla – Giant Trevally, 20.8 lbs
3rd Place: Argie Biare – Giant Trevally, 19.1 lbs
Shore Jigging Division

1st Place: AJ Padilla – Giant Trevally, 20.8 lbs
2nd Place: Nico Espulgar – Bluefin Trevally, 7.4 lbs
3rd Place: Nikolas Afaisen – Giant Trevally, 7.0 lbs
Team Division

1st Place: Team Gadao (AJ Padilla, Argie Biare, Nico Espulgar) – Total weight of fish caught: 39.9 lbs
Biggest Bluefin Division

1st Place: Kurtis Meno – 10.3 lbs

Guam’s Jeremiah Camacho shot a perfect game at the 48th Hong Kong Open. The 22-year-old Guam National Team Member shot his 18th career perfect game on lanes 1 and 2 at Top Bowl Lanes in Hong Kong.
