Guam’s small delegation to the 10th Micronesian Games will bring home 32 total medals as the Games comes to a close on Monday in Majuro. Guam sent teams to participating in basketball, tennis, track & field, spearfishing and beach volleyball.
Our men’s and women’s basketball teams started and ended the Games on a high note as they captured gold in the 3×3 tournament and wrapped up the Games winning the 5×5 tournament.
The women’s squad had no problems, cruising to gold over the CNMI in the finals, while the men’s team had a tougher foe in Pohnpei, but still remain unbeaten in the Micro Games (9 gold in 9 Games).
Regine Tugade kept her crown as queen of the track, defending her title as the fastest woman in Micronesia and breaking the Guam and Micronesian records in the 100m sprint (11.76 seconds).
Tugade led the Guam Athletics squad with four gold, one silver and two bronze. Fresh off of graduation from GW, Aleah-Rae Castro finished with an impressive two gold, two silver and three bronze. Jovan Pineda came away with three gold and a bronze to add to Guam’s collection.
The beach volleyball duo of Kendra Byrd and Lori Okada came oh-so-close in winning gold, only to fall in the title game to Palau in a nail-biter. Nevertheless, they still garnered Guam’s first medal in the sport at the Games.
Todd Genereax (individual gold) led the spearfishing team to yet another gold for a 4-peat. After winning in Palau (2010), Pohnpei (2014), Yap (2018), Guam can add the waters of Majuro to their golden chest.
CNMI Record
Our brothers and sisters from the north really brought their ‘A’ game, breaking the record for most gold medals in Micro Games history with 70 gold. The old record was held by Guam with 56 when we hosted the Games in 1994.
11th Micronesian Games
Since the 2022 Games were pushed to this year, the organizers will get right back into the four-year cycle and hold the 11th edition in 2026 in Nauru.
