Over 200 Guam BJJ practitioners take to the mats in Las Vegas

PRESS RELEASE – Over 200 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes from Guam and across the globe gathered in Las Vegas this week for the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) World Master Championship and Jiu-Jitsu Con, the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event in the world. This prestigious competition, spanning multiple age divisions from 7 to 55 years, saw a formidable contingent of Guam competitors, who united for a rare and symbolic photograph, celebrating their island heritage.

The photo session, organized by Las Vegas-based Guam Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Drew Palomo, was a significant moment of unity and pride. Athletes from various age groups and skill levels participated, including notable Black Belts such as Drew Palomo, Mike Carbullido, Tim DeJesus, Lloyd Cubacub, Jon Delos Reyes, Luis Reyes, Rolando Sampson, Jeff Macatangay, Daniel Vegamora, Clinton Nededog and Chris Guitterez, among others. This gathering highlighted the diverse yet close-knit nature of the Guam Jiu-Jitsu community.

“This photo is more than just a snapshot; it’s a powerful reminder of where we come from and how far we’ve gone in spreading the art of Jiu-Jitsu,” said Drew Palomo. “Seeing so many talented athletes from our small island competing on this grand stage—from kids to seasoned veterans—is both humbling and inspiring. It’s a testament to the growth of Jiu-Jitsu in Guam and the strength of our community.”

The IBJJF World Master Championship & Jiu-Jitsu Con is renowned for bringing together the world’s top Jiu-Jitsu talent. The event not only showcases individual skill but also emphasizes the importance of camaraderie, culture, and shared heritage—all of which were on full display as Guam athletes took to the mats, representing their island with pride and determination.
