FIRST EVER MARIANAS DUMAU SET FOR JUNE 20

PRESS RELEASE – The Guam Marianas Open Organization will host the first-ever Guam Marianas Dumau Open Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Tournament on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the University of Guam Calvo Field House. 

The event will feature Gi and No-Gi divisions for kids, teens, adults, and masters competitors, providing athletes of all skill levels an opportunity to compete, gain valuable tournament experience, and earn official ranking points through the Asian Sport Jiu-Jitsu Federation (ASJJF). 

Created as a developmental event within the Guam Marianas tournament series, supported by the Dumau brand of BJJ apparel, and sanctioned by the ASJJF, the Guam Marianas Dumau Open was designed to give athletes more opportunities to compete throughout the year. 

New opportunity for local practictioners coming up on June 20.

While the Guam Marianas Open International Championship remains the organization’s premier event, Dumau provides intermediate competitors with a chance to sharpen their skills, build confidence, and prepare for larger competitions.

Yet, the event welcomes both first-time competitors and experienced athletes looking to stay active, gain mat time, and continue their growth in the sport.

“Every black belt was once a white belt competing for the first time,” said Steve Shimizu, President of the Marianas Open Organization. 

“The Guam Marianas Dumau Open is about giving athletes that opportunity. Whether you’re stepping onto the mats for the first time or preparing for bigger competitions later in the year, every match is a chance to learn, improve, and grow.” 

In addition to individual competition, academies will compete for Top Team honors while athletes continue earning ranking points and gaining valuable experience. ART and Marianas Open representatives will also be in attendance scouting athletes for future opportunities, including invitations to ART events on Guam and throughout the region. 

“Our goal has always been to create more opportunities for athletes here on Guam and throughout the region,” Shimizu said. “We want competitors to have a place where they can challenge themselves, represent their teams, and continue building toward their goals. The growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on Guam has been incredible, and events like the Guam Marianas Dumau Open help continue that momentum.” 

A Partnership for Progress 

The Guam Marianas Open Organization also recognizes the continued support of the Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB), whose partnership helps strengthen Guam’s position as a destination for sports tourism and international competition. 

“We are grateful for the continued support of GVB,” Shimizu said. “Their generous sponsorship helps us bring athletes to Guam, create opportunities for our local competitors, and continue growing the sport while showcasing our island to visitors from around the region.” 

Teams from Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and throughout the Pacific region are expected to participate. As an Official ASJJF 3-Star Ranked Event, the

Guam Marianas Dumau Open reflects the organization’s commitment to developing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu throughout Guam, Micronesia, and the Mariana Islands while providing meaningful opportunities for athletes of all ages and experience levels.
