CRASH CUTS MANAMI’S OLYMPIC RIDE

Guam’s pro triathlete deals with bad luck

Manami Iijima-Martin’s day in Paris was cut short in the Olympic Triathlon after a crash on the bike and chain difficulties forced officials to pull her from the course.

After a long, tough journey just to qualify for the Olympic Games, Iijima-Martin had some bad luck on the wet course. Three others out of the 55 athletes competing slipped and fell on the bike portion.

It was a rainy day, and despite the health concerns, the athletes still swam in the River Seine for the swim portion as tests cleared it as safe. The competitors in the women’s triathlon went into the water at 8 am local time, the first time an Olympic event has been held in the Seine in 124 years.

Her husband Jon Martin is there in Paris with her and said that she’s doing well with no major injuries, but with a taste of the competition, she will now focus on the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
