PANTHERS CONTINUE TO ROLL MEET 3

Guam High stays dominating track and field events

By Jay Leon Guerrero

The defending champion Guam High Panthers are still the team to beat in both boys and girls divisions in the ISA Track and Field League in 2024. From the track to the sand pits, the Panthers continue to either win or place in the top three in their events.

Brianni Soto won all four of her events with victories in the 200m, 400m, 4×100 relay, and 4×400 meter relays. The Panther girl’s won 11 of 15 events on Thursday.

Guam High sophomore Hayden Buck won the long and triple jump events. Buck won the Long Jump with a distance of 3.91 meters and later won the Triple Jump with a distance of 9.63 meters. Katelyn Lunsford, a junior from Guam High, recorded her PR in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.76 seconds which was good enough for a first place finish.

Alieah Garrido from Notre Dame won the 100-meter girls sprint event. Garrido, a sophomore, was surprised at her performance as a first timer in Track. “I was nervous because this is my first year running track,” said Garrido. “After seeing the results, I’m hoping to qualify for the all-island and contend for a medal.”

Sharks win 3 events
Eyana Pereda-Marques from Sanchez scooped the middle distance races, winning the 800m and 1500m events. Multi-sport athlete Kayna Kanemoto won the Javelin event in convincing fashion with a PR throw of 34.10 meters. Kanemoto won the javelin by more than 10 meters to the second place finisher.

The Panther boys team was just as impressive on Thursday, winning 9 of 15 events. Aaron Johnson is still the fastest high school sprinter, winning the 100m event and the long jump. Cameron Brantley continued his dominance in the 300m hurdles event. Jayden Jackson won three events on Thursday with victories in the 200 meter event and both relays. Jackson PR’d in the 200-meter event with a time of 23.43 seconds.

Nathaniel Carlson won the 3000-meter event and later PR’d in the 400-meter event with a time of 55.01 seconds for Guam High. Isaiah Hayashi won the Javelin for the Panthers with a distance of 35.10 meters.

“I felt pretty good in my event today,” said Hayashi. “I still have to work on my technique and angle, but my goal is to win javelin and discus at the All-Island.”

Tiyan Titan Christopher Angoco stamped his ticket into the All-Island in the 110-meter hurdle event with a PR winning time of 18.49 seconds. He also won the triple jump with a distance of 11.27 meters.

Sanchez Shark Shynez Alcairo won the 1500-meter event with a PR time of 4 minutes and 48 seconds. Alcairo won the event in a field of 20 runners.

The Friars had three athletes win their respective events on Thursday. The Friars are finding success in throwing events with victories in the Shotput and Discus. Joevince Meno and Zachariah Calvo went 1-2 in the Shotput with distances of 10.77 and 10.18 meters, respectively. Ethan San Nicolas PR’d in the Discus with a distance of 27.88 meters. Cameron Bordallo, a senior from FD, won the 800-meter event with a time of 2:14.

The Guam Adventist Academy Angels have one of the smallest teams based on numbers but are showing improvements with every meet. Darius Jano-Edward said the teams goal is to bring home a medal at the all-island.

“As a team, we working to accomplish getting more of us to qualify for the All-Island,” said Jano-Edward. “We are working harder, taking those extra steps to get to the all-island and win medals for our school.”
