GECKOS CRUSH ISLANDERS, READY FOR FD

The GW Geckos remain undefeated after taking down the JFK Islanders 57-0 on Saturday night at Ramsey Field. The defense put up an impressive performance with 4 interceptions, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 safety (and a partridge in a pear tree). All this while holding the Islanders’ offense to -26 yards.

The offense had just as impressive of a game with touchdowns from multiple Geckos. However, Seth Dumanal gets the nod for the most impressive play after returning the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

“Man, I just saw the ball go up in the air, and I was really excited. I wanted to take it to the house. Broke one tackle, just saw an opening and just took it all the way,” said Dumanal on his touchdown.

A safety-sack by TyJames Leon Guerrero would catapult the Geckos’ scoring masterclass. Rayn Rios ended the first quarter with a 4-yard punch to enter the 2nd 16-0.

It was the defense who shined under the lights in the 2nd half. In just 24 seconds, Ysidro Flores returned his interception 20 yards for a touchdown. On the next kickoff, the Geckos would force a fumble and recover it to set up a 16-yard passing touchdown from Colen Ray Salas to Jaeden Indalecio just over a minute later.

Senior linebacker Rayn Rios led the Gecko defense with a game-high 6 tackles. The defense stood strong as the Islanders tried to come up with anything to get things going. Their consistency shined in every play, already looking in top form. Rios had this to say.

“We just show up to practice and work everyday as always,” said Rios.

GW vs. FD this Friday

The Geckos will have to keep sharpening their skills as they will take on the 9-time defending champion FD Friars.

“Big game. [FD has] been undefeated. They won championships, they won games. But they’re just another team, just other players. They’re human. We could defeat them. I think we can do it,” stated Rios.

Both teams will enter the game 4-0. With the most anticipated game of the season, the question in everyone’s mind is can this Gecko squad put an end to Friars’ 85 game win streak? We will learn the answer next week.
