The Academy Cougars are one win away from their third straight high school fastpitch softball title and fifth in seven years.
The Cougars scored eight-plus runs in the first and third innings and were never threatened by the Okkodo Bulldogs in Saturday’s semifinals 20-5 at the Tai Field. It was a far cry from the 2025 championship game between the two teams.
Academy will face the #3 JFK Islanders next Saturday in the championship game. The Islanders advanced in the other semifinals 11-8 with a mild upset over the 2nd-ranked GW Geckos.. This game was played at 2 pm after a lack of umpires forced the 10 am game to be moved later in the afternoon.
COUGAR DOMINANCE
The Cougars came right out of the gates with nine runs in the first inning, highlighted by Mylie Butters and Sadie Guerrero stroking two-run singles each.
They would tag on eight more runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning.
Guerrero and Kiersten Fernandez had run-scoring doubles to go along with a slew of walks that resulted into runs.
By then, Academy was way ahead 19-0!
Okkodo went down fighting with five runs on zero hits in the top of the fourth inning.
Academy’s Guerrero struck out nine in the circle, giving up no hits and walked six.
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
The championship is set for 1 pm next Saturday at the Okkodo Softball Field.
