ISLANDERS TAKE TOP SPOTS

[sixcol_five_last]

Not even a rainy, muddy course could stop the elite cross country athletes from running their hardest.  Crossing the finish line first was JFK Junior, John Aquino IV, with a time of 17 minutes, 48 seconds.

“The race was hard, it was a really rainy and muddy course.  It was a good challenge.”

Aquino beat the second place runner by nearly a quarter of a mile.

“I went a little faster than my last race, I was just pacing myself.  My goal is to just PR each meet and see where it goes from there.”

The rain definitely made an impact on everyone’s race but for former GW Gecko who is now a senior at JFK, Naomi Blaz, “The rain is just another obstacle that runners have to go through.  I was glad that I went through it because without that I wouldn’t know when it came to All-Island”.

She came in first for the ladies with a time of 22 minutes, 10 seconds, beating her competition by an estimated 400 meters.

“I feel good and also without my teammates pushing me, I couldn’t have done this.”

The 3.1 mile course was a good mixture of flat, up and down hills and turns.

“The hard thing about this course is the turns, so when I put my mind into it, I just attack and attack each turn.”

Blaz’ goal for the season is to hit low 21’s or high 20’s.

“Working hard in practice, pushing myself in the meets, and if I do both of that, and also the encouragement of my teammates then I know I will accomplish it.”

It made Blaz happy to see her former Gecko teammates out on the course with her.

“GW was my former team and I will always respect that.  It’s fun seeing them out there pushing themselves and knowing they’re working as hard as I do.”
